Song Yi wurde in der nordchinesischen Stadt Harbin geboren. Im Alter von 13 Jahren begann er das Kontrabassspiel. Sein Lehrer war Xu Hao Zhang, Solobassist des Hei Long Jiang Opernorchesters. Von 1990-1994 studierte Song Yi bei Professor Fu Da am Zentralkonservatorium in Peking. 2003 nahm er ein weiterführendes Studium beim Solobassisten der Tschechischen Philharmonie, Jiri Hudec, am Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester auf, das er mit dem Master Degree und der höchsten Auszeichnung abschloss. Song Yi war viele Jahre lang Mitglied des China Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra und hat mit diesem sowie weiteren Orchestern, in denen er regelmäßig mitwirkte, mehr als 500 Konzerte gegeben. Zudem gründete er das "Pekinger Kontrabassquartett" und konzertiert weltweit als Kontrabass-Solist. Song Yi lehrt als Professor am Zentralkonservatorium sowie an dem daran angeschlossenen Musikgymnasium in Peking. Daneben ist er Gastprofessor am Royal Northern College of Music. Zahlreiche seiner Schüler konnten mit herausragenden Leistungen und Wettbewerbs-erfolgen auf sich aufmerksam machen und bekleiden erstklassige Positionen. Song Yi was for many years a member of the China Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and has given more than 500 concerts with this and other orchestras with whom he has regularly appeared. He furthermore founded the Beijing Double Bass Quartet and gives solo double bass concerts throughout the world. Song Yi holds a teaching post as Professor at the Central Conservatory and at the attached Music High School in Beijing. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Royal Northern College of Music.
